How far does $3 Million in Section 37 Money go when you’re redesigning a semi-hidden Downtown Toronto Park?
The Section 37 Money was negotiated during the previous term of Council, it adds up to about 2.9 Million Dollars. It comes by way of the Aura Condominium Tower being constructed immediately to the south-east of the existing green (and concrete) space.
Thursday evening saw 100 College Park area residents turn out for a Landscape Design Workshop inside the Delta Chelsea Inn Hotel.
Two Concept Designs were presented.
By evening’s end, a show of hands requested by Ward 27 City Councillor Krystin Wong-Tam confirmed the room wanted Design Option ‘1’. It was unanimous (minus one design staffer who raised her hand for option ‘2’).
College Park currently is in disrepair and in need of serious Tender Loving Care. We’ll see that TLC on May 1, 2013 when the final and go ahead design proposals are presented in the concluding College Park Revitalization Public Meeting.
A few things came to mind listening to the presentation.
First, Despite its official street address of 420 Yonge Street, College Park is hidden from the streets that surround it. Similar to Trinity Square Park two and a half blocks south, one must discover this location.
There were no youth at tonight’s meeting, yet there were complaints about youth smoking up in the park at odd hours of the night. Well, the street address is “420” Yonge Street. Technically, making College Park part of Yongesterdam.
College Park itself sits atop of an underground parking lot. In other words, it’s a platform.
Reminded me of last month’s Hudson Yards NYC talk. Oxford Properties is building an entire Concrete Platform atop the railyards. Might this be an opportunity for design engineering principles there to inform the ultimate park design here?
We’ll find out on May 1, 2013.
